How old do I have to be to apply for jobs?

Employment legislation varies depending on the province you live in:

AB

  • According to employment standards in Alberta, you may begin working from the age of 13.

BC

  • According to employment standards in British Columbia, you may begin working from the age of 12 as long as you have a written consent from your parents. Once you've turned 15, you will no longer need parental consent.

ON

  • According to employment standards in Ontario, you may begin working from the age of 14.

QC

  • According to employment standards in Quebec, you may begin working from the age of 14. Written parental consent is required if you are under the age 14 and wish to work.  

Keep in mind some jobs may have different minimum age requirements. They will usually be indicated in the job description.
